Working through a set of carefully organised documents

Understand the task

A first enquiry can briefly explain the situation, the intended outcome and any known deadlines. It helps establish the subject of the question and whether I can accept the engagement.

Initial correspondence does not itself establish an engagement. Possible conflicts of interest and the terms of assistance need to be addressed before work begins.

Establish the starting point

Following an initial discussion, we identify the documents and information needed for analysis. Confirmed facts, assumptions and unanswered questions are considered separately.

We agree on how to transfer documents containing sensitive information. This helps keep the work focused on the relevant material.

Agree on scope and deliverables

We define the work, its terms, fees and the form of the result. This might be a document review, a draft agreement, a written legal position or an agreed set of next steps.

The sequence depends on the circumstances. Deadlines controlled by other parties or authorities are distinguished from the time needed to prepare my own materials.

Keep decisions understandable

During the engagement, I explain the significance of identified issues and available options. Material changes in the circumstances are discussed before the scope changes.

At the end of an agreed stage, you receive the specified materials and explanations for their use. Matters requiring a further decision or a separate engagement are stated clearly.

THE NEXT STEP

What would you like to resolve?

Briefly describe the situation so we can identify the relevant area and consider how I may help.
